I am so glad to be in the middle of the target audience of these two movies, because that way, I can appreciate both. And appreciate I did. I must say, the storm's timing is impeccable. What better day to cancel work and classes than Wednesday when all the new movies open? Of course this doesn't affect me, though it does affect my sister and if her work wasn't cancelled, I wouldn't have anyone to watch the movies with. And I'm real glad that I live South of Manila and therefore didn't see first hand exactly how devastating the storm was (is?) as where I live, it hardly rained at all.
Anyway, I guess it's kind of weird to again have seen two movies consecutively in one day, but what can I say? It's not everyday they cut work short so why not make the most of it?
Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement
Let me tell you, I'm kinda getting used to seeing Anne Hathaway in a wedding dress (ref. ending of Ella Enchanted). But it's not really something to complain about as she looks very pretty in all the fancy dresses that she wears. She certainly has the role of 'fairy tale princess/awkward teenager' down. And some of the expressions/funny faces she made throughout the movie were just hilarious. The other parts though (i.e. Raven and Julie Andrews' singing bit) don't deserve as much laughs. So even though it was tackling the topic of marriage and ruling a country, the movie was still pretty kiddie--exactly what one can expect from a Disney film.
I still admire the creators though for getting the romance bit better this time, as compared to the last Princess Diaries movie in which the supposed romantic line was "Because you saw me when I was invisible." I don't know, but that just didn't seem romantic enough for me. But this movie was. I liked all the parts with Princess Mia and Lord Deveraux, and their witty banter at the end had a way better effect than "Because you saw me when I was invisible." Although, the crowning ceremony was nowhere near as cool as the one in 'The Prince and Me'. Really great dress though--the best I've seen Anne Hathaway in so far.
All in all, I'd say this movie is one of those rare occassions wherein I like the sequel better than the original. Well, except the bit about Joseph and Clarice. You'll know what I mean if you watch it.
Laws of Attraction
I didn't really want to watch this film at first as I kinda hate Julianne Moore and am not too fond of Pierce Brosnan either. And also, I liked 'Intolerable Cruelty' (George Clooney, Catherine Zeta-Jones) a lot and so thought it was a bit pointless to watch another movie about divorce lawyers that probably wouldn't be as good.
I'm glad I was wrong.
I'd say that I liked this movie just as much as I liked Intolerable Cruelty as this was also way funny (especially the montage with the judges) with really clever conversations, not to mention footage of my favorite European country (Ireland), and also sensible insights about love, relationships, marriage and divorce. And it kept everything realistic (in contrast to the Princess Diaries) but not too cynical.
I'm recommending this as a date movie, as although it's about lawyers, which usually inevitably use legal jargon in their dialogue, it kept everything simple and normal and thereby somewhat romantic. And there weren't many scenes you'd be embarrassed to watch with somebody else (if there were any at all).
It might also be interesting to note that this is actually a British production and not an American one, showing that the movie industry does a very good job of getting people from different nations to work together (Mind you, this was said by an English ambassador who visited DLSU once, as a cheerful ending note to his talk on the EU's position on the war against Iraq).
Anyway, I really don't think I'm smart enough to be able to give this movie the good review it deserves. So I guess I'm just going to say that Parker Posey's really funny, Julianne Moore redeemed herself (for me--as I said, I kinda hate her (especially in Evolution and I didn't even care to watch Hannibal)) and I sooo want to go to Ireland, even for just the leprechaun figurines.
The only thing bad I can say about our earlier movie experience really, was seeing the Excorcist preview and not being ready for it. Yikes! *shudders from fear* Oh, and I guess the terrible service at KFC sucked too.
